Bangladesh has a coastline of 480 km. The border districts of Khulna and Satkhira in the south-western region are vast coastal areas. Shrimp resources are particularly involved in changing the socio-economic conditions of the people of Khulna and Satkhira. In the early seventies, the first shrimp farming in Bangladesh was started in Khulna district. Shrimp farming was first started in Sadar, Kaliganj, Shyamnagar and Debhata police stations of Satkhira district under the greater Khulna division. At that time only Bagda shrimp was cultivated in the traditional way. In addition to procuring shrimp from the Bay of Bengal from the seventies Later, lobster farming started from the nineties.

(A) Saltwater shrimp:

  1.Bagda Shrimp:

Studies have shown that there are about 450 species of bagda shrimp in the world. A total of 63 species of bagda shrimp have been found in Bangladesh so far. Of these 63 species, 18 are marine species. Bagda is the largest and tastiestshrimp cultivated in salt water. The Bagda shrimp is called Tiger Shirmp because of its striped spots on the body.The male species is larger than the female species. The bagda shrimp are suitable for spawning at the age of ten months and move to the deep sea to lay their eggs. In our country, bagged bagda shrimp also carries the most economic importance through artificial insemination.

 1. Wheel shrimp:

Wheel shrimp is also known as white shrimp. Wheel shrimp are unable to tolerate temperature variations and extensive salinity of water. Wheel shrimp fry are found in large numbers in canals, creeks, etc. in the estuary of the Sundarbans.

2. Horina shrimp:

The body of the Horina shrimp has wide bluish brown and densely colored spots. The legs have colored spots and flagella. Because the flagella are bright red in color, they are called Horina shrimp. Shrimp is found in coastal areas. Horina shrimp are able to withstand a wide range of water salinity variations.

(B) Freshwater shrimp:

  1. Lobster:

Out of 26 species of freshwater shrimp found in Bangladesh, 10 species of lobster have been identified. Of all the species, the freshwater lobster is the largest in size. A lobster is an adult at 5/6 months of age. Lobsters are found near the tropics and in the Indian Pacific Ocean. Among them Bangladesh, Myanmar, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, London, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam are important. The natural habitat of lobsters is rivers, lakes, haors, baors, beels etc. They move to the mouth of the river to lay eggs in the natural environment during the breeding season. In Bangladesh, lobsters are commercially produced and farmed through artificial insemination. The country contributes 23% to the export of frozen lobster.
