Sundarbans, The Largest Mangrove Forest:
The Sundarbans is a vast forest on the coast of the Bay of Bengal which is one of the natural wonders of the world. The Sundarbans covers about 4.2 percent of the total area of Bangladesh and 44 percent of the total forest area of the country. Located in the delta region of the Meghna, Brahmaputra and Ganges basins, this magnificent natural forest covers the Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts of Bangladesh and the 24 parganas of the Indian state of West Bengal. As the largest mangrove forest in the world, the Sundarbans is the largest uninterrupted forest in the world, which has developed on the salty coastal environment. Of the 10,000 sq km, 7,016 sq km is in Bangladesh and the rest is in India. UNESCO recognized the Sundarbans as a World Heritage Site on December 6, 1997. Marine currents, salinity, and mudflats encircle the Sundarbans.
Sundarbans Biodiversity:
There
are 334 species of plants, 365 species of animals, 35 species of reptiles, 41
species of mammals and 240 species of fish. There are 14 species of crabs.
And
among the innumerable biodiversity including 43 species of oysters, the local
fishermen-fishermen, Bawali-Mouyal, Chunri-Munda, Mahato people have built a
historic sustainable forest-based way of life. In addition to the famous Royal
Bengal Tiger, the Sundarbans is home to numerous species of animals, including
deer, birds, crocodiles and snakes.
