The only grief of the people of Koyra and Dumuria in greater Khulna is the flood control dam

The only grief of the people of Koyra and Dumuria in greater Khulna is the flood control dam:

Large areas of Koyra and Dumuria upazilas have been flooded again due to lack of proper maintenance. The people of North Bedkashi, Koyra Sadar and some other unions of Koyra Upazila have been submerged in water. Locals complained that no official of the Water Development Board was coming to visit.

Meanwhile, due to lack of flood control embankment in Dumuria, two villages, Banshtala and Latabunia, were inundated again, causing severe damage to the lives of the locals. Only 17 days ago, due to the impact of cyclone Ampan, the village protection dam broke and the two villages were completely submerged in the water of Ghengrail river.

To save lives, the Banavasis take shelter in the school verandah. They go without eating. Although the dam was later repaired at the voluntary shelter, the area was flooded again last Wednesday at midnight due to the water pressure of the devastating Ghengrail river.

According to the locals, about 40 km of embankment of Koyra upazila was damaged due to the tidal wave caused by the cyclone Ampan. In many places, about two and a half lakh people have been affected due to the collapse of embankments and submergence of houses, fishing grounds and crops.

Claiming that these dams needed to be maintained, the locals said that due to the inaction of the Water Development Board, the aggrieved people started repairing the embankments on a voluntary basis. Over the past two weeks, locals have been repairing all the wreckage. On Wednesday night, those dams broke again and sank.

Koyra Upazila Chairman Mr. SM Shafiqul Islam said, "We were stuck with the dam with the common people." Then they needed maintenance. We requested the Water Development Board officials to do this. However, as they did not do that, water is entering the area again. However, if this situation continues, people will have to suffer for a long time. He added that there is no end to the suffering for food on the one hand and the suffering due to water on the other. How long can poor people work like this in a voluntary home?
It is learned that Bashtala and Latabunia villages are located on an island between Ghengrail and Bhadra rivers under Sahas union of Dumuria upazila. The two villages are always at risk as there is no flood control dam here. Due to the shaky ring dam, the dams are repeatedly eroding. On May 20, Cyclone Ampan flooded several villages along the Ghengrail River, flooding two villages. After that, with the help of the upazila administration, about 400 Banavasi families took shelter in different places including Latabunia school. Even after days of not eating, they voluntarily repaired the damaged area of the dam. But due to the rising full moon, the dam broke again and flooded the area.

Imtiaz Uddin, general secretary of the Koyra Development Struggle Coordination Committee, said at least 20 new villages have been flooded. Upazila Sadar is also soaking in water now. On the one hand, the food crisis, on the other hand, people are struggling to cope with the pressure of salt water. The Water Development Board is not doing any kind of supervision. He expects responsible action from Paubo officials to repair the dam immediately.

Koyra Sadar Union Chairman Muha. Humayun Kabir said local people were trying their best to stop the flow of water. With the cooperation of the Paubo authorities, it would have been possible to survive the dam. However, it is not possible due to their indifference. In the meantime, most of the embankments in North Bedkashi and Koyra have been breached and flooded.

On the other hand, due to lack of flood control embankment in Dumuria, two villages Banshtala-Latabunia have been inundated again.

Local MP Narayan Chandra Chand said he had visited the damaged area of the dam along the river and talked to the locals. Sustainable embankments are essential to save Banshtala and Latabunia villages.

The former minister further said that at the moment, the dam will be repaired again with urgent allocation of funds from various sectors of the Upazila Parishad including ADP and voluntary work of the locals. He also promised to build a sustainable embankment under the supervision of LGED.
