Khulna is the third largest city in Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. Khulna Division and Khulna District Headquarters are located in Khulna town. Khulna Shar is located on the banks of the Rupsha and Bhairab rivers in southwestern Bangladesh. Khulna is one of the oldest river ports in Bangladesh. As Khulna is an industrial and commercial area of ​​Bangladesh, Khulna is considered as one of the industrial cities.

The second seaport of Bangladesh is Mongla seaport 48 km from Khulna city. Located away. The world famous coastal forest Sundarbans is located in the southern part of Khulna district.  Khulna industry:

Although Khulna is famous as an industrial city, at present most of the industries here have zero quota. During the British rule, Khulna had the only newsprint and hardboard mill in the country which is now permanently closed. Most of the jute mills in Khulna are also closing down. Notable industries in Khulna at present are the exportable fish industries developed by the private sector. However, the only state-owned wire factory in the country is Bangladesh Cable Industries Limited located in Khulna.

At one time Khulna was called the city of silver. This is because shrimps were produced in large quantities in this area. Still is, though a lot has decreased. In Khulna region a lot of shrimp is farmed with white fish. In Dakop, Paikgachha and Koyra upazilas of Khulna, a large number of shrimps are grown in salt water. Pottery work is done in some villages of Dumuria upazila of Khulna region.
